What happens at your first visit

About an hour, with a physical therapist. You can stop us or ask a question at any point.

  1. 01

    Step 1: You check in

We confirm your plan card and your surgeon's orders. Forms are on our patient portal, so you can fill them in at home.

  2. 02

    Step 2: We listen

Your therapist asks what happened, what your hands do on a normal day and what your surgeon told you.

  3. 03

Step 3: We examine the hand and arm

We look at swelling, movement, strength and feeling, as far as your surgeon's orders allow. We say before we touch anything tender, and we stop when you say stop.

  4. 04

Step 4: We explain, and fit a splint if one is ordered

In plain words: what we found, what it means for your plan, and why a splint helps or does not.

  5. 05

Step 5: We agree on what comes next

You leave knowing what to do at home, what to protect and when we see you again. We write to your surgeon.

What to wear and bring

  • What to wear

A short-sleeved shirt, or sleeves that push up past the elbow. Please leave rings off the affected hand.

  • What to bring

Your plan card, your surgeon's orders or protocol, imaging reports if you have them and any splint or sling you wear.

  • How long it takes

About an hour. Later visits are shorter, and we tell you at each one when we expect to see you next.

What is not decided on day one

We do not decide on the first day how long you will need care, or whether you will wear a splint all the time. Those depend on your exam, your surgeon's orders and how the hand responds, and we go over them with you as you go.
