Nerve conditions

Nerve conditions

A nerve that is pinched, stretched or irritated can cause numbness, tingling or weakness in the hand. We look for where along the arm the trouble may start, from the neck to the fingertips, and plan care you can do at home.

This care is for you if

  • Your fingers go numb or tingle, often at night

  • Your grip is weaker, or you drop things

  • Your doctor suspects a nerve problem and suggested therapy

  • You had nerve surgery and your surgeon sent a protocol

What to know before you come

  • What a visit looks like

A first visit is about an hour. We ask where and when it happens, test feeling, strength and movement, and look at the neck, shoulder, elbow and wrist in turn.

  • What we do

We explain what we found, teach positions and movements that give the nerve room, and make a splint when it helps. If tests are needed, we tell your doctor.

  • What decides how many visits

What the exam finds, how long the symptoms have been there, what your day asks of the hand and, after surgery, your surgeon's protocol. We tell you what we expect at each visit, and we do not promise a number.

  • Who treats you

A physical therapist from our three: Lynn Hartman, Darrell Pickett or Nare Tashjian. Every name carries its Oklahoma license, and the letters after our names are on the team page.

  • How it is paid for

Your plan or you pay, the same as other therapy. How fees work explains each, and the front desk goes through yours before you come in.

  • When to see a doctor first

See a doctor first if weakness came on suddenly, if numbness spreads or reaches your face or leg, or if you have new trouble with balance or speech. Call 911 for sudden weakness on one side, a drooping face or trouble speaking.

Questions about nerve conditions

Is numbness at night a nerve problem?

It can be. We examine the whole arm rather than assume, and we tell you what we find and what we cannot tell from an exam.

Do I need a splint?

Sometimes. A splint can hold the wrist in a position that gives the nerve room. We explain whether it helps in your case.

Will you send me for tests?

If your exam points to something we do not treat, we write to your doctor and explain why.

Numb or tingling hands?

Book a visit, or call and ask the front desk what to bring.
